Michael J. Wilder is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP and is based in the Firm’s Washington, D.C. office. He focuses his practice on tax issues arising from corporate transactions involving U.S. and foreign entities, such as mergers, spin-offs, liquidations, bankruptcy and insolvency matters as well as restructurings within consolidated and multinational groups. He is a frequent speaker on these issues.
Prior to joining the Firm, Michael worked in the Office of Associate Chief Counsel (Corporate) at the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). At the IRS, Michael reviewed and consulted on guidance projects, technical advice memoranda, private letter rulings, litigation, and other matters concerning corporate tax transactions and issues. He was a member of the corporate section 355 committee, a group of senior IRS lawyers with experience in spin-off transactions who consider novel issues arising in private letter ruling requests, and the troubled companies committee, which considers difficult questions under sections 108, 165 and 382.
Before his legal career, Michael was a professional chess player. He became the national champion of the United States in 1988 and was awarded the title of international grandmaster in 1989.
Michael is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia.
